Rise of the Corrupt
A cynical Defender craving for status
During a routine operation, Desesh and his crewman were shipwrecked on the planet Dusk. While most of the crew were scattered or killed on impact, Desesh and his fellow troop Perceval managed to remain on the ship as it landed. Deciding that he didn’t like Perceval’s name, Desesh began calling him Reggie instead, much to Perceval’s/Reggie’s dissatisfaction. They went forth to find a way to escape Dust and reconnect with the imperium, and in doing so happened across a woman in the forest. Before confronting her, they hung back to observe whether she was a threat. This decision paid off when a tribesman attempted to court her and was destroyed by her powers over flame; they gathered that this woman was a powerful sorceress, and were affirmed in their reasoning by a passing tribesman from whom Reggie had learned the local dialect. Desesh carefully attempted to address her in his best impersonation of the tribe-speak, which angered the sorceress enough to prompt her to try and destroy him with a flaming projectile. Desesh, however, was keen enough to see this coming, and managed to artfully dodge in the nick of time; the streaking missile soared past and hit the friendly tribesman, reducing him to a pile of dust. This angered Reggie, who gave the sorceress a shocked look. The sorceress then waved her hands at him in response, and Reggie was struck with a disturbing feeling. It turned out the sorceress was much like a modern Circes, enticing men to steal their knowledge and cultures then disposing of them shortly after. Over the course of such excursions, she had picked up a deep understanding of Low Gothic, and was able to converse freely with Desesh. She was impressed by how he had evaded her magic, and was willing to guide him to the local Imperium camp. Once there the sorceress took her leave and went back into the forest. Within the camp, Desesh and Reggie met with inquisitor Ahmazzi who had come to retrieve any crew members from the wreck who had survived. After relating their story, Ahmazzi decided both were prime material for the still forming ID. Reggie, however, had been plagued by the sorceress’ black magic, and was torn asunder where he stood. Desesh resolved to carry on in his memory, and joined the ID. Along the way, Reggie and Desesh had wounded the spider, who vowed revenge from that day on.
